What is the IRA drug price negotiation program?

The Inflation Reduction Act (2022) gave CMS the authority to negotiate prices directly with manufacturers for certain high-spend Medicare drugs. The program selects drugs based on total Part D or Part B spending, with negotiated prices (Maximum Fair Prices) taking effect after a defined timeline. This represents the first time the US government has directly negotiated drug prices for Medicare.
