Why did Eli Lilly acquire 4E Therapeutics for non-opioid pain research?

Eli Lilly bought Austin-based 4E Therapeutics to strengthen its portfolio of non-opioid pain treatments targeting peripheral mechanisms that avoid addiction and cognitive side effects. The deal, Lilly’s 11th in 2026, adds 4E’s MNK enzyme inhibitors to a growing lineup of phase 2 pain assets as the company repositions itself for leadership in non-opioid pain.
